Nikon has held photo contests for more than half a century since the Nikon Photo Contest International in 1969, with the aims of providing a place for professionals and amateurs alike around the world who love photos and films to interact, and contributing to the development of imaging culture.

Nikon has held photo contests for more than half a century since the Nikon Photo Contest International in 1969, with the aims of providing a place for professionals and amateurs alike around the world who love photos and films to interact, and contributing to the development of imaging culture.

For 2024-25, the contest evolved to elevate its film categories to be at the forefront for the first time in its history, and needed an updated identity to match. We developed branding and a visual language to support the transformation, building in motion to engage audiences and help them see things from a different angle.

The new logo and design system are constructed around angular forms, layered planes, and a sense of movement, creating a 3D-like space that invites audiences to discover hidden meanings and unseen perspectives.

Contemporary and flexible, the new toolkit was purpose-built for today’s media environments — from social channels to immersive digital displays, and the certificates and trophies awarded to winners.

Photography and moving imagery naturally take centre stage in the identity. The design system itself is relatively stripped back, providing the framework for showcasing entrants’ work in a digital ‘metaverse’ gallery.
